Description

The Intergroup Dialogue Leadership Series: Tools for Leading Through Division

In today's divided and changing world, strong dialogue skills aren't just helpful - they're essential.

Whether you're leading a team, working with diverse communities, or navigating conflict, being able to listen, reflect, and understand others makes you a more effective leader. This interactive series introduces Leadership Omaha alumni to the proven Intergroup Dialogue model, developed and tested by faculty and staff at the University of Nebraska Omaha, and adapted to prepare Omaha's leaders for deeper connection, stronger teams, and lasting cultural transformation.

In this five-part series, participants will:

  • Learn the foundational practices of intergroup dialogue - what it is, how it differs from debate and discussion, and why it's essential for leadership today.
  • Explore the personal and collective ingredients of identity and how socialization, power, and polarization shape our worldviews.
  • Develop listening and storytelling tools that build empathy and relational trust across lines of difference.
  • Gain practical strategies for engaging conflict productively, using tools like the CLARA method and balanced processing to support authentic leadership.
  • Create a personal leadership action plan to carry intergroup dialogue skills into ongoing community and organizational work.

Leave with actionable strategies to lead with integrity, listen with empathy, and foster inclusive spaces in a divided world.

This series will be facilitated by Dr. Herb L. Thompson III, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Communication at the University of Nebraska Omaha, and Manasi Kate, Leadership Development Intern at the Greater Omaha Chamber.
