Volunteer Outing at CASA for Douglas County
Thursday, November 14, 2024 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (CST)
Description
Children served by PHP often come from environments marked by instability, trauma, and risk. When they are removed from their homes, they frequently leave behind most of their belongings due to safety concerns. In many cases, what little they can take is hastily packed in a trash bag, a heartbreaking experience that further strips away their sense of security and self-worth. PHP strives to rewrite this story by providing children with a backpack filled with essential hygiene products; shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, lotion, deodorant, sanitary items, and culturally appropriate items—along with comfort items.
For the activity, we will have your group pack the backpacks – all liquid items will go into a gallon baggie and then be placed in the backpack with the other items. This is done in an assembly type situation at counter height stations. Instructions for what goes into each pack will be provided too upon arrival. These backpacks, thoughtfully prepared, offer more than basic needs; they provide a sense of ownership and stability.
This meaningful gesture helps ease the transition into different homes and schools, nurturing a child’s self-esteem and resilience during an incredibly difficult time. To sustain PHP, CASA depends on community generosity – with not only the donations for the packs themselves, but the donation of time in assembling the packs. We appreciate you joining us!
