About

Saving Grace provides a benefit to the Greater Omaha Area as Omaha’s first professionally coordinated, perishable food rescue and delivery service. Saving Grace serves as a reliable, dependable “food pipeline” for excess, perishable food from restaurants, caterers, grocery stores, cafeterias, and community gardens. We then match the donated food to the needs of local agencies and deliver the food the same day, free of charge, to nonprofits that feed our hungry. This not only ensures the food remains fresh, but it also saves the funds normally required to warehouse food. As a highly efficient, grassroots organization, we are able to achieve impressive returns on investments. We are working to save and distribute as much of the 40% of food waste from our landfills by feeding hungry bellies instead. Thereby filling a niche not served in our community. We are collaborating with local community groups to relieve the staggering rate of food insecurity including; The Food Bank of the Heartland, Omaha Restaurant Association, No More Empty Pots, Heartland Hope Mission, Together and Heart Ministry, Gretchen Swanson Center for Nutrition, as well as the Food Policy Council and the Douglas County Health Department.

Food insecurity, defined as having regular eating habits interrupted by a lack of food or being unsure where the next meal is coming from, is a major problem afflicting Nebraska.  In a 2011 study financed by the ConAgra Foods Foundation and Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and conducted by Nielsen, it was discovered that child hunger rate was 20.6% in Douglas County.  Overall in Douglas, Sarpy, and Pottawattamie Counties, the food insecurity rate is 14.3%.

We bring awareness and education on food waste and hunger issues.
